For my BFA thesis, I re-imagined and illustrated a deck of Lenormand oracle cards. Similar to Tarot, the Lenormand is a form of French cartomancy, but relies on card combinations and blunt meanings to create a clear and meaningful picture. Drawing heavily from Greek mythology, the Delphi Lenormand seeks to create a link between the classical and contemporary.
The meaning of Lenormand cards is more blunt than a Tarot card, and the geometric nature of the illustrations reflects this. I drew from a vibrant color palette to set the cards off when viewing them from a distance.
In addition to conceptualizing each card, I also created a line of incense and smudge sticks for an all-encompassing divination practice. Individual illustrations were made for each package, abstractly referencing Grecian deities.
A card spread cloth was also fabricated, upon which each card is placed. For an individual reading, each card is randomly laid out from the beginning to the end, changing the context of the meanings depending on the house it is placed upon.
